Local
roadname derivations - O to R
Oram Court: After Peggy Oram the last
person to operate the Hanham ferry
Orchard Boulevard: (Cedar/Maple Close,
Fair Lawn) There was an orchard in this area
known as Dobson's Orchard. Before the current housing
was built there was a farm track between what is
now Warmley Golf Couse and California Road, this
track was known as Dobson's Lane. All these names
came from the developer, there is a "Fairlawn"
in California, it's a cemetary!
Palmers Close: After a landowner in
the parish of Siston (Info provided by Shaun Harris
of North Common)
Park Road/Way/Cl./Cres.: Named after
Coronation Park to which they form a boundary. See
timeline 1937
Parkwall Road / Cres.: The original
manor house at Barrs Court had a high boundary wall,
some still remains near the childrens play area.
The name Parkwall is recent and denotes the road
runs along part of the original boundary. Cadbury
Heath Road used to extend through Parkwall Cres.,
which was then a through road, to what is now Woodward
Drive.
Parsons Walk: After a past vicar of
St Barnabas Church. (Mr Parsons)
Pearsall Road: After the Pearsall Family,
industrialists, builders and owners of Willsbridge
Mill. (John Pearsall)
Poynz Court: The Poynz family lived
at Rodway House on Rodway Common, Mangotsfield.
Princes Court: This is among other
names with a forest theme with the emphasis on royal
visitors of past times - well that's my conjecture
anyway
Pullin Court: Mr Pullin ran a cycle
shop in High Street Oldland in the 1940's/1950's.
The shop is now "Crispies" chippy.
Queens Road: After Queen Elizebeth
II (most of road built 1954/5, just after her coronation)
Reed Court: The name of one of the
Kingswood Forest rangers.
Roger's Close: Roger Jeffries was a
popular local boy killed in an accident. N.B.
It's unusual for a road to be named after a forename.
Roy King Gardens: Roy King (1927-1989)
was a local councillor and historian, he had strong
links with Cadbury Heath.
